About This Service

Soapstone is a soft, dense stone with a high talc content. That makes it unusual: it shrugs off acids and does not need a stain-blocking sealer, but it scratches and dents far more easily than granite or quartzite. Most soapstone owners also oil or wax the surface to deepen the color, and over time that leaves patchy dark areas next to dry, light ones. Restoration means sanding out scratches and nicks with progressively finer abrasives, removing uneven oil buildup, repairing chipped edges, and refinishing the whole surface so it darkens evenly. We restored a soapstone bar in a Summerlin luxury home this way, and the process is the same for kitchen counters, islands, and farmhouse sinks.

Signs Your Stone Needs Professional Attention

Visual indicators that indicate it's time for restoration

  • White scratches that show on dark stone
  • Some areas darker than others
  • Surface feels tacky after oiling
  • Small dents where pots were set down
  • Rough or chipped edge along the front

Why Soapstone Wears Unevenly in Las Vegas

Las Vegas conditions create unique challenges for natural stone

  • The dry desert air pulls oil out of the surface fast, so oiled soapstone fades in patches
  • Fine desert dust works like sandpaper on a soft stone
  • Hard water leaves mineral spots that people scrub hard, adding scratches
  • Bar and entertaining areas see glassware and bottle impacts on edges

Our restoration process is specifically designed for Las Vegas conditions, using products and techniques that address these local factors.

Oil, wax, or natural patina?

Mineral oil darkens soapstone quickly but needs reapplying every few weeks at first, especially in dry Las Vegas air. Soapstone wax lasts longer and adds a soft sheen. Leaving it natural lets the stone develop its own patina, darker where it is used most. We will finish it the way you want and show you how to keep it even.

Why Choose Our Soapstone Restoration

  • Scratches and nicks sanded out, not filled
  • Blotchy oil and wax buildup corrected
  • Chipped edges and corners repaired
  • Even, uniform color across the slab
  • No acid-etch or stain-sealer upsell
  • Care plan for oil, wax, or natural patina
  • Backed by our one-year warranty

Our Process

  1. Inspect and Test

We check scratch depth, edge damage, and how much oil or wax is on the surface. A test area shows how the stone will darken.

  2. Strip Old Buildup

Uneven oil and wax layers are cleaned off so the stone starts from one consistent tone.

  3. Sand Out Damage

Scratches, knife marks, and dents are sanded out with progressively finer abrasives. Soapstone is soft, so this is controlled hand and machine work.

  4. Repair Edges

Chipped edges and corners are filled or reshaped and blended into the profile.

  5. Finish Evenly

We apply mineral oil or a soapstone wax across the entire surface so it darkens uniformly, or leave it natural if you prefer.

Ideal For

  • Soapstone kitchen counters and islands
  • Home bars and wet bars
  • Soapstone farmhouse sinks
  • Fireplace surrounds and hearths
  • Older soapstone that was never maintained

Common Problems We Solve

  • Light scratches across the work area
  • Knife marks and dents
  • Patchy dark and light areas from oiling
  • Chipped edges near the sink or overhang
  • Sticky or gummy wax buildup

Frequently Asked Questions

Can scratches be removed from soapstone?

Yes. Soapstone is soft enough that scratches and small dents can be sanded out completely. Deep gouges can be reduced a lot, then the surface is refinished so the area blends.

Does soapstone need to be sealed?

Not for stain protection. Soapstone is dense and does not absorb liquids the way marble or limestone does. Oil or wax is cosmetic. It darkens the stone and hides light scratches.

Why does my soapstone look blotchy?

Usually from uneven oiling. Areas that get wiped more often lose oil faster and turn lighter. We strip the old oil and reapply evenly so the color matches across the counter.

Does soapstone etch from lemon or vinegar?

No. Soapstone is chemically inert, so acids do not etch it the way they etch marble. Its weakness is scratching, not etching.

How much does soapstone restoration cost?

Our minimum visit is $700, and most jobs come in around $1,200. The exact price depends on the size of the counters and the damage. Estimates are always free.

Is your work guaranteed?

Yes. All of our work is backed by a one-year warranty.
