What Is Stone Restoration?

Stone restoration brings damaged, dull, or stained natural stone back to life. Instead of tearing out and replacing your countertops, floors, or showers, we use professional grinding, honing, and polishing techniques to remove the damaged surface layer and reveal fresh stone underneath.

Think of it like refinishing hardwood floors, except we're working with marble, travertine, granite, and other natural stone. The result is a surface that looks new without the cost, mess, or weeks of disruption that come with replacement.

In Las Vegas, stone restoration is especially important. Our hard water (among the hardest in America) leaves mineral deposits that dull surfaces fast. Our dry climate, pool chemicals, and intense sun all take their toll. Professional restoration addresses damage that cleaning can't fix.

Why Las Vegas Stone Needs Extra Care

Las Vegas has some of the hardest water in the United States. 278 parts per million of dissolved minerals. That's nearly three times what's considered "hard" water elsewhere. Every time water sits on your stone and evaporates, it leaves behind calcium and magnesium deposits.

Our dry desert climate makes this worse. Water evaporates fast here, concentrating those minerals quickly. A single water spill in Summerlin causes more buildup than a week of moisture in Seattle.

Add in chlorine from pool splash-out, dust storms that grind particles into surfaces, and intense UV exposure that can fade sealers, and you have a perfect storm for stone damage. That's why Vegas homeowners often need professional restoration every 1-2 years, while homeowners elsewhere might go 5+ years between services.

"A Summerlin homeowner called us last month about her Carrara marble countertops. She'd lived with hard water spots for three years, convinced she'd have to replace the whole kitchen. Two hours later, we'd removed fifteen years of buildup and restored a mirror finish. She said it looked better than the day it was installed."

How Professional Stone Restoration Works

Professional stone restoration is a multi-step process that removes damage from the surface without harming the stone underneath. Here's what happens during a typical restoration:

1

Assessment & Cleaning

We examine your stone to identify the type, finish, and damage. Then we deep-clean the surface to remove dirt, residue, and buildup that might interfere with restoration.

2

Grinding (If Needed)

For deep damage, lippage, or severe etching, we use diamond abrasives to remove a thin layer of stone and create a flat, even surface. This step isn't always necessary for light damage.

3

Honing

We progressively refine the surface using finer and finer abrasives. This removes scratches and prepares the stone for polishing. The result is a smooth, matte finish.

4

Polishing

Using specialized compounds and pads, we bring out the stone's natural luster. For marble, we use crystallization techniques that create a chemical bond with the surface for a brilliant, long-lasting shine.

5

Sealing

We apply a professional-grade sealer that penetrates the stone's pores, protecting against stains and making daily cleaning easier. Sealers don't change the appearance; they protect it.

When Restoration Makes Sense (And When It Doesn't)

Restoration Is the Right Choice When:

  • Surface damage: scratches, etching, dullness
  • Hard water stains and mineral deposits
  • Uneven tile edges (lippage)
  • Dirty or discolored grout
  • Small chips or cracks (repairable)
  • Worn or faded sealer

Replacement May Be Better When:

  • Stone is cracked through to substrate
  • Water damage to underlying structure
  • Large missing pieces
  • Stone is extremely thin (under 1cm)
  • You simply want different stone

Not sure which category your stone falls into? That's what our free assessment is for. We'll examine your surfaces, explain what's possible, and give you an honest recommendation, even if restoration isn't the right solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what service I need?

Start with your problem, not the service name. If your stone is dull or scratched, you likely need polishing. If you see white spots or rings, that's usually etching or hard water damage. Dirty grout needs cleaning or repair. Not sure? Contact us with photos and we'll diagnose it for free.

Do you work on all types of stone?

Yes. We restore marble, travertine, granite, quartzite, limestone, terrazzo, slate, and engineered quartz. Each stone type requires different techniques, and what works on granite can damage marble. Our technicians are trained in proper care for each material.

Is restoration really better than replacement?

In most cases, yes. Restoration costs 50-70% less than replacement, takes hours instead of weeks, and creates no demolition dust or waste. The only time replacement makes sense is when stone is cracked through or the substrate underneath is damaged.

How long does stone restoration take?

Most jobs complete in one day. A typical countertop takes 2-4 hours. A bathroom floor might take 4-6 hours. Large floor areas may take a full day. We'll give you a time estimate during your free assessment.

How often should I have my stone professionally maintained?

It depends on use and stone type. High-traffic floors may need annual polishing. Countertops in busy kitchens benefit from yearly maintenance. Showers in hard water areas may need attention every 1-2 years. Sealing should be refreshed every 1-3 years depending on the sealer used.

Why does stone damage happen faster in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas has some of the hardest water in America. 278 PPM of minerals. Every time water dries on your stone, it leaves deposits behind. Our dry climate makes water evaporate fast, concentrating those minerals. This is why Vegas homes need more frequent stone maintenance than homes elsewhere.

Do you offer free assessments?

Yes. We provide free on-site assessments throughout the Las Vegas valley. We'll examine your stone, identify the problem, and give you an honest recommendation, even if restoration isn't the right solution for your situation.

What's the difference between polishing and honing?

Polishing creates a high-gloss, reflective finish (the classic 'wet look' on marble). Honing creates a smooth but matte, non-reflective finish. Some homeowners prefer honed finishes because they show fewer scratches and fingerprints, though they're more porous and may need more frequent sealing.

Can you match the finish to surrounding areas?

Yes. We can blend repaired areas into surrounding stone so there's no visible transition. This is important for chip repairs and spot treatments. We'll assess the existing finish during your consultation and match it precisely.

Will sealing make my stone stain-proof?

Sealing makes stone stain-resistant, not stain-proof. A good sealer gives you time to wipe up spills before they penetrate the stone, usually 10-30 minutes depending on the sealer quality. It doesn't make stone immune to all damage, but it does make daily care much easier.

Do you work on outdoor stone like pool decks?

Yes. We restore outdoor travertine, limestone, and other stone surfaces. Outdoor stone faces unique challenges like UV damage, pool chemicals, and extreme heat. We use techniques and sealers designed for outdoor conditions.
