UV-Cured vs. Breathable Coatings for Marble

Liquid coatings for marble come in two main types: UV-cured coatings that form a sealed film, and breathable coatings that bond into the surface. Our etch-resistant coating is the second kind. Here's how they compare.

Short version

Sealed and UV-cured vs. breathable and bonded

UV-cured coatings are applied as a liquid, then hardened on site with UV lamps into a film that sits over the stone. Acid hits the film instead of the marble, so they are typically sold as fully etch-proof.

Ours is a single-part coating that bonds chemically into the surface and stays breathable, so moisture vapor can leave the stone. We call it highly etch-resistant, not etch-proof, because it gives you time to wipe up spills rather than sealing the stone off completely. There is no UV step, and it is applied by the same local team that restores your stone.

Breathable

Why we chose breathable over sealed

Marble, limestone, and travertine are porous, and moisture moves through them. A fully sealed layer stops acid, but it also stops vapor, and trapped moisture can show up as cloudy spots. We chose a coating that protects the surface and lets the stone breathe. The trade-off is honest: wipe acidic spills instead of leaving them overnight.

Local

Restoration and protection from one team

We have restored marble in Las Vegas homes since 2010, from The Ridges to MacDonald Highlands. Etched or scratched stone gets honed and polished first, then coated in matte or gloss, in the same visit. Pricing is by the square foot, quoted from your photos.

Common questions

Questions we get

Which protects better against acid?

A sealed, film-forming coating is built to block acid completely. Ours is highly etch-resistant and breathable: everyday spills wipe off, but acids left for hours can reach the stone. Tell us how you use your kitchen and we will tell you honestly which fits.

Do you need UV lights to apply your coating?

No. It is a single-part coating with no UV curing step, which keeps the visit simpler.

Why does breathability matter?

Marble, limestone, and travertine are porous, and moisture moves through them. A fully sealed layer can trap that moisture underneath, which can show up as cloudy spots over time.

How is your coating priced?

By the square foot, based on the surface and how much restoration it needs first. Text us photos and rough measurements for a free quote.
